Webfetti.com

When I studied in junior high school in Vietnam, I read a book which I think that I will never forget. The title of the book is"Tat Den" or "Turn of the Light" which was written by Ngo Tat To. That is a story about Ty- a teen years old girl- who was born in a poor family. Because her father couldn't pay tax, he was prisoned. Her mother had to work very far the family to pay the tax and the fee to let her husband out of the jail; therefore, the girl had to take care of her younger sisters and brothers. Everyday, she went to the rich families to work and was paid by the excessive amount of food of her owners. But their family's life was more difficult when the rich always tried to trick them. Those people tried to make the girl's family in the debt so that the girl's mother had to sell their house and dogs. Unfortunately, they were still in dept, loving for the mother also the sisters and brothers,Ty accept to sell her self for a rich family in her village with the same price of her dogs . It is tragic novel which reflected accurately the society in my country in the past. I choose this novel as my favorite because I realize that Ty who was still very young but she is soon aware her duty with her family. I admire her decision and her love for the family. That is also one of the reasons why I choose my nick name is Ty ^^.

I think her name is Tý (j/k), and the main content of this novel is about her mother, Mrs Dậu which represented for almost the Vietnamese peasants under the French colonial system.

Thanks, Ty. I don't know this book, but I would like to read it. I'll try to find it in English.

What do you think the author wanted people to see and understand about life in the colonial system? Do you think conditions have changed now? (In other words, would the author use the same story to talk about current conditions?)

Work on length - this entry is 264 words.

    Your score: 20/20

Tắt đèn was first released in 1939. I think, based on its content, this novel's title should be translated into English as "When the light is out"

I think the author wants to expose the negative of society also the uselessness of the government at that period. Furthermore, he also wants the readers realize the difficult lives also the poverty of people in the colonial system. Although it still has poor people in my country now, their lives now are better than in the past. The government tries to help the poor by many other ways such as giving welfare, creating job,and helping them have the condition to go to school.
